4 day trip to National Parks- Day 1

Other than everybody else, the Americans celebrate Labor day in September rather than on the first of May. On the other hand it is always on a Monday so you get a long weekend. We extended the weekend even more and took Friday afternoon and Thursday off as well.

Friday we left for Las Vegas where we stayed at the Stratosphere, the highest tower in town. Stepping out of the plane felt like stepping into a blow dryer it was so warm, dry and windy. Not unpleasant at all, when you are sipping a drink in the pool while the sun is setting. As we've been to Vegas before the only sight seeing we did was driving along the strip where all the famous Casinos are located to our hotel at the end of the strip. We got up early next morning (the sun was just rising) and went on our way to the Grand Canyon.

After a 5 hour drive from Nevada through Arizona and Utah back to Arizona, we finally arrived at the north rim of the Grand Canyon. This part of the Canyon is less famous and less touristy than the south rim but just as impressive. The two rims are only 15km apart as the eagle flies but a 4 to 5 hour drive around it by car. We got to the rim across a plateau where wild beefalos (a cross between a cow and a buffalo) and turkeys run around. Nothing is preparing you for the spectacular view you get when you are actually standing on the rim of the Canyon that drops 1500m right at your feet. The views are just awesome!

The night drive to our hotel at Mt Carmel junction was quite exhausting as we had been driving for a while already and a change in altitude from 0m to 2400m was a bit demanding on our heads.

One of the great sight seeing that we have missed, the Grand Canyon is certainly worth it ! As for the driving to the mountains that remind me when we drove from Death Valley to the ski city of Mammoth Lake quite a drastic change ;o)

Yeeez - Utah rulez! Isn't that a wonderful piece/peace on earth? We also spent one night at Mt. Carmel Jct. - we camped literally AT the junction. At least it was for free... Looking foreward to the read about the rest of your trip! Cheers, Claudio & Anina
