Mexico!

It was one of the last weekends that Selina and I could go to Mexico together. Soon my visa will expire and when mine is renewed Selina's will be expired... So we were waiting in traffic at the border on Friday afternoon during rush hour with all the Mexican workers. When nothing was moving for a while everybody started honking. Imagine a honking concert on a backed up 5-lane freeway. That's why we wanted to go to Mexico. It's just a little wilder.
We enjoyed the sunset on the way down to Ensenada, a two hour drive from San Diego. There we already knew a hotel we wanted to stay at. An old mission style building. We spent the weekend with surfing in the morning, fish market (including lunch), harbor strolls, reading by the pool, margaritas and more seafood for diner. On Sunday we drove back to the border across the number one wine country in Mexico. We stopped for a tour at the biggest winery of the country and tasted some of their wines. Soon after we were stopped at a military checkpoint. You must have heard about the problems with drug cartels in the border area... And that's when the car started shaking. It was a 40 second earthquake, magnitude 7.2 close to Mexicali. That's maybe 150km away. We first thought something is wrong with the engine but soon realized that it was an earthquake. The checkpoint was all of a sudden not exciting anymore... The next stop was at the border where we were very pleasantly surprised by the short wait time. Unfortunately, I needed a new stamp for my visa and it was hard to find someone who was familiar with that process. So despite the short wait we spent another 45 minutes waiting for my stamp... I took it with humour and was amused by the officer who hammered my information into a computer. And then we were back in San Diego right in time for diner.

Shake it down in Mexico...omg, hope you guys are all ok!
Interesting when an earthquake hits with a "7" then there is all hell breaking out in one country, in another there is maybe only a crack in a building...makes me thinking sometimes...
There is still a big one overdue in Basel...

cheers

Mexico is great! I have the feeling there's a big one overdue almost anywhere there's some seismic activity... Our house is 150 years old so it's probably earthquake proof!
