Bullriding

We have a new passion and it is bullriding! I'm sure all of you have seen it on TV at some point. But you have to go to see it in real to appreciate the difficulty of it. It was also a very American experience with lots of cowboy hats, boots, pickup trucks and patriotism. We drove a little bit inland to a casino with our friends Elena and Nan. The professional bullriding association held a competition there. The show starts with a parachute that drops a huge American flag into the arena. The flag is never allowed to touch the ground (that's not a game that's part of the United States flag code and applies to everyone!) and there are marines who catch it and hold it while someone sings the national anthem. Hmm...

And then it starts with fierce bulls throwing off brave cowboys. The goal is to stay on for 8 seconds. If you succeed you get judged for your style and the moves of the bull. I wouldn't even sit on one of these bulls in the stall before they let them out! The really tough boys wear cowboy hats, while most of the riders wear a helmet and a protective vest.
