My Californian friends

Good mooorning Switzerland!
Another day in the lab is over and we have survived. Selina had 3 Margaritas in the happy hour in La Jolla meaning that once again it's me who has to write a post... No, no, it's not that I always write because she had too many drinks!
Today is "cinco de Mayo" the Mexican national holiday for those who want to learn something. Enough education, let's move on to something more or less interesting... but what?! Surf was really good last week: not so interesting. Lot of work: normal. Solved my PCR problems in the lab, which finally allows me to continue my project: great for me but not that interesting for you.
Sunday was BBQ with our San Diegan friends in Hillcrest, the gay neighborhood of San Diego. We like the atmosphere and some of our friends (gay) live there. I always enjoy being with "real" Americans who are not scientists. It gives me that "real" American feeling ;-). At work we are always surrounded by non-American scientists who have friends who are non-American scientists. Nothing against our colleagues and friends at work! They are very important to me as well. I still feel closer to the other Europeans. It's just a completely different background. But I don't want to leave the US without having local friends like so many other postdocs do. Yes, we are primarily here for work but there is so much more to life than pipetting all day long. All you scientists know what I'm talking about: This job is your life and you have to love it or you will never be happy with the ridiculous salary and the many hours you spend in the lab. All the failures and the fight to sell your results and get money to continue your projects. But there should remain enough space in life to see something else and not loose contact to the "normal" world. That's another important point in having friends who are not in science. Some of them have a degree from the university, others not but they are all working their ass off (éxcusez l'éxpression) to pay their rent, food and life. Makes me feel very happy with my salary. And if you should think that Americans are all ignorant Bush-voters they will easily prove you are wrong. And finally it's just so much cooler to walk along the beach with girls with sick-ass tattoos than with pale scientists - hahahaha!

So, this post got slightly out of hand. More about rad tattoos in the next one. Enjoy spring and if it should not be warm enough you are always welcome in California!

Just to get this clear: I did not go to the happy hour! ;-) Worked hard and went straight home.

I guess you were delighted by your own picture? It took her a bottle of wine to get close to this posing blue iPhone. A pic with much room for interpretation..
