Saturday was an "on the road" day. The island is the biggest of all Hawaiian islands. Driving from one side to the other takes about 2 hours. We spent some time at one of those beautiful white sand beaches (these are rare on the big island), drove past meadows with cows that reminded us of the Jura in Switzerland, passed one of the two volcanoes to arrive on the other (east) side of the island. There we had a quick look at the famous Waipi'o valley, Akaka falls, a waterfall in tropical vegetation before we headed back to "our" side of the island. On the way back we drove halfway up Mauna Kea (4,205 m or 13,796 ft) to stop at the visitor center for some star gazing. Mauna Kea is famous for its great views of the sky and has several observatories on the summit. In winter you can even ski there... Then back to the coast and south to our apartment where we immediately fell into deep sleep.
