Monday we spent again quite some time on the road. This time we drove south to the Volcanoes National Park. It was really impressive again to see how quickly the landscape changes on the island. The one thing that I can't stop thinking about is the fact that the island is basically made by two big volcanoes and they are both 4000m high! I don't think we have any mountain in Switzerland that raises 4000m into the sky from where you stand. In Hawaii you are at the beach and you can see both these summits. And they don't even seem that high. Anyway... On the way to the park we stopped at a beach that is famous for its inhabitants the Green Sea Turtles. Strange creatures.
Beautiful and wild coast in the south of the island. Very windy. The park greeted us with wet and cool weather. We were not too unhappy as this gave us an opportunity to wear our new rain jackets.
And the volcano landscape had its own charm in this kind of weather. We did a few short hikes to take in the surreal environment. Unfortunately, there's no lava flowing on the surface right now. The tsunami in Japan had it's impact here too. The wave that hit Hawaii cooled down the lava on top so that the flowing lava is now covered by lava stone. Still, at night you could see the glow of the magma in one of the craters. Pretty impressive when you start thinking about what happens under the ground. Not that far away from where you are standing! Another drive home in the dark after a long day full of excitement.
