Hawaii part 1

Has anybody wondered about why I posted that movie with the manta rays? Yes, because we have seen that live! Let's rewind and start from the beginning:
We spent this year's Thanksgiving on Hawaii, the big island. What an amazing trip! We left San Diego early Thanksgiving morning (flights are cheapest when everyone eats Turkey with their families...) and arrived in Kona at noon. We got upgraded to first/business, which made for a nice start of the trip.

Approaching the island gives you a good impression of its main features: Two big volcanoes. The airport is on black lava stone right by the ocean and the arrival/departure buildings are tropical huts. We picked up our rental car (this time we upgraded to a 4WD jeep) and drove to our hotel/apartment south of Kailua. Very spacious with bedroom, living room and kitchen. We thought the kitchen would be nice to prepare our own breakfast. Turned out that we also prepared most of our diners at home. No one goes to Hawaii for the food... We went to try out Selina's new snorkeling gear before it got dark and already spotted a slendertail moray and some colorful fish.
Friday we went snorkeling again and did a dive refresher course to get ready for the real ocean adventure. Both of us are certified divers but haven't been in the water for more than 8 years. Needless to say we didn't remember much... The course was in a pool and I had so much fun just diving in a pool that I couldn't wait to get into the ocean. The best part was that the pool had a window where you could see the shops next to the dive school. We spent the rest of the day checking out the village and more local beaches.
